Day 1 New York to Vietnam

I have traveled at lot, but never to Asia and I have never blogged. My son, Michael, told me how to get started. "It's easy", he said. Well, so far he's right. I am on a very special trip this time. It's a vision trip with the Free Wheelchair Mission (FWM) in Vietnam and our host is Giving it Back to Kids (GIBTK). Our mission with FWM is to provide the transforming gift of mobility to people with disabilities in developing nations and GIBTK to transform lives through education, medical care, nutrition and love. Let me share this amazing experience with you each day.

Day 1 - Actually, I'm not sure what day to count this one. It was Thursday night when I left my home in NY. I just arrived in Hanoi, Vietnam. It's mid afternoon on Saturday. I've never been on an airplane for 17 hours straight! That first leg of the trip got me to Guangzhou, China. At the airport I thought I accidentally went into the men's room for a moment. I opened the door to this on the floor:
Option #1

I don't see these too often! I quickly shut the door and twirled around to assess my surrounding. I peaked in some other stalls with fixtures more familiar to me and I saw a woman cleaning the stalls. Whew! I'm in the right place (although these days anything goes!)
Option #2
A few hours later I was on my way to Hanoi. Checked into the hotel and went to the ATM to get some local currency. I took 20,000 Vietnamese Dong out figuring that should tide me over for a little bit. Got back to the room and checked out the exchange rate. I took out a whopping US$8.57! Shopping is going to be really tough.

Tomorrow morning I meet up with the Free Wheelchair Mission and we head out to Lang Son province, about 2 hours north of Hanoi and close to the China border.
